FROM HERE

Set in Berlin and New York, FROM HERE (90 min) is a award-winning film featuring four young artists and activists from immigrant families redefining belonging in an era of rising nationalism globally.

The Right to Have Rights

The Right to Have Rights (30 min) invites us to reflect on the meaning of citizenship, statelessness and life with a “tolerated” status. It shows the struggles of refugee and non-refugee migrants, BPoC and Roma and Sinti for equal rights in Germany and asks how we can work together for a society in which the right to rights applies without restriction. Created as part of the campaign “Pass(t) uns allen” by With Wings and Roots e.V. and RomaniPhen e.V.

Miman’s Story

Miman’s Story, developed in partnership with IniRromnja and Romaniphen, is a multimedia educational resource on Gadjé-racism – the racism against Roma and Sinti – that is based on the story of the protagonist Miman from our documentary film FROM HERE. It consists of four video and learning modules: 1) Citizenship and Belonging, 2) Romani Realities in Germany, 3) Histories and Continuities of Discrimination and 3) Visibility and Invisibility. It is designed for educators, social workers, and youth over the age of 14.

The learning modules contain historical background information for educators, discussion questions about the videos, supporting activities on the topics and exercises that encourage students and educators to “Take Action.” The materials are a tool to raise awareness in educators and young people to the history and current situation of Roma and Sinti in Germany, stimulate critical reflection, and offer spaces for empowerment and solidarity for students from various communities.

Where are you from from?

Through the voices of ten young people living in Berlin, Germany and New York, USA, Where are you ‘from’ from? highlights the insight of young people from immigrant families in two societies struggling with migration, national identity and racism. Residing on different continents but sharing similar questions and experiences, the interviewees reflect on their families’ immigration process, growing up with multiple cultures, and how they see themselves today. The video is a tool to lead discussions on complex identities, the impact of immigration, and many forms of racism, in the context of both societies’ increasing diversity.

Both the film and accompanying discussion guide have been created especially for use with high schools students, in university classrooms, and in community settings.

Article of Faith

Article of Faith is a portrait of Brooklyn-based Sonny Singh, an activist working against bullying in New York City and one of the protagonists of our documentary FROM HERE. A devout Sikh, Sonny wears a turban and does not cut his hair. These practices, however, make Sikhs the regular targets of anti-Islamic harassment and violence. Memories of being teased and having his turban pulled from his head both as a child and adult, fuel his work with young people. Organizing Sikh youth from across New York City, Sonny leads a successful campaign to pass the Respect for All resolution, which combats bias-based harassment in public schools.
